This really is a tough one. I like the game, its art style, the organic non-grid building and emerging path structures, the beautifully animated construction phases, the relatively serene and peaceful atmosphere ("relative" because you can "send out your troops", which plays out more like a dice roll with a couple of modifiers applied than a real strategy game, but you can get your pixel soldiers killed)

Then there are the bugs, of which there are plenty, ranging from "bah, 'tis but a flesh wound" to joy-sapping annoyances like the idiotic pathfinding, to reportedly save game breaking errors (which I have frankly not encountered, but the number of bug reports about those is not insignificant).

I don't know whoever thought it was a good idea to "release" this game from early access; I have been playing intermittently for some four or five years in EA, and it feels like another four or five years wouldn't have been too long to iron out at least a couple of the more annoying shortcomings. Who knows if the game would have been ready by 2030, but it certainly was not ready in 2025.

Foundation is playable, and it is beautiful and highly addictive, and it is indeed enjoyable, but calling it a smooth and bug-free "release" version is just pretentious.

Not recommended in 2025 if you are looking for a polished experience – maybe check back in a couple more years – but do give it a try if you are willing to accept that you're but a paying beta tester.

That said – if you'll excuse me, I have a city to look after.

Don't know what to write for a review. But I just can not stop playing this game. Been a gamer since i was 7 which started with a Commodore 16.
Went on to play The Settlers, Civilization and Sim City on my Commodore Amiga 500. I like the tinkering, building, tweaking, buying and selling.
Except for Sim City I never liked the military part of these games and that is why i cannot STOP PLAYING FOUNDATION.
I do not think this review helps anyone.

I collected every achievement in this game, but my greatest accomplishment was taxing my people into the ground, building a lavish palace for myself while they lived in shacks, and then pretending to be surprised when they left.

At this point, I might as well run for office.

11/10 historical accuracy. Would oppress my own people again.

One of the best city builder games I've played. All the updates have greatly improved the game as well. It's addicting and allows so much freedom to build creatively while still being very functional. I really like being able to modify buildings without having to completely demolish them and rebuild them in a new location. I often have a hard time stopping to go to bed. I always just want to add that one more building or accomplish one more goal. I like the inclusion of military aspects but without having to personally direct battles or race a computer to build your military first before they come to destroy you. It's so relaxed and cozy I could spend all day fixing up my village to be perfect.

This game has such a great balance between management and creative gameplay, and it's fantastic that you can redo areas as much as you like. The possibilities are endless — hours of fun, endless gameplay. Definitely recommend it!

I love this game, and that's the only reason I'm going to criticize it. No idea why anyone wastes time complaining about things they clearly don't like in the first place. So my 2 criticisms are as follows..

1) White text on a light background. I play this game one third blind to the text, and I still love it, but this is silly.

2) The roofs of the high density houses look awful (and the houses all look fantastic before this point). The artists clearly did some research for the architecture, or just understand how water works, and although the game is cartoony (nothing wrong with that) it just looks all wrong if you know anything about building.
Some might say they took artistic license, but my complaint is not against their artistry, it's purely based on gravity and water erosion, very basic parts of life. Being a carpenter/cabinet maker for 3 decades, I cannot unsee obvious architectural failures. The mishmash of rooftops they have would literally doom those buildings to fail in just a few years. That's why no one ever builds roofs like that.
My guess is the devs were just crunched for time and will hopefully fix it, but for now I've just added a mod to increase housing and am trying to make sure I don't upgrade to high density. But again, I only mention these things because the game is so good it earned my constructive criticism.

Now I'm going to go play it some more and hopefully figure out why my peeps paths are blocked, and spend way too much time admiring the countryside before making small incursions into it to feed my peeps, while leaving plenty of the wild areas for them, and me, and the boars, to enjoy..
Can't forget the boars.. it's always all about the boars: our supreme overlords.

Have a great day everyone!

Very good game. A bit of a learning curve but after a few tries on various scenarios, and at 471 hours, I now have mastered (??) the game. I still only have 75% of the achievements and I tried a number of interesting mods. Nice graphics, various levels of difficulty, easy controls, many different objectives, four main streams (simple city building, metropolis, monastery, and war castle). Not a lot of action if that's what you are looking for, mostly strategic, planning, building and adding decorations to get higher scores.Truly enjoying it

Looks easy, but there is more depth to the game than any other city building games I've played.

I am certainly not a hardcore city builder and I hate it when my money runs out, but Foundation offers an enormous amounts of options to make it really sandbox. Even so, there is still plenty to do and figure out and make work. But give yourself enough leeway in the start settings and you can take it at a leisurely pace. Some of the mechanics of building are a bit obscure but googling around usually resolves this. There's a logic to all of it, in the end. A lovely game, certainly addictive and graphically beautiful.

Just started playing it again since it fully launched and had its updates, and I have to say, its incredible how much this game has improved over the years! It was already a really fun game, but now its one of the best I have played. I a highly recommend it. If you like city builders while also not stressing that much enjoying a sim too, then pick this us.

If your into city builders and sim/management games. I highly recommend this one. It's fun, simple and very satisfying. It's not a hard game like many other city builders and there is still a lot of space for creativity and challenges.

I enjoy it. I struggle to keep commoners around because they occasionally just refuse to eat and leave the village. There is plenty of food access and refined food in all the stalls. I even put some right next to their homes. They'd rather starve than be given extra goods and services. :(

Really great start but 25 minutes in to each session, the game starts lagging until you close to the desktop and restart. Very frustrating, but seems to be very fun other than that.
